FOR REAL #1
Tiago Manquinho & Manuela Bolegue
Braunschweig & Hannover
In the new festival format FOR REAL, creatives from dance and art come together with people from outside the dance world to explore and develop dance and its boundaries.
For the first edition, contemporary choreographer Tiago Manquinho and the hip hop choreographer Manuela Bolegue have spent four weeks in a rehearsal room without previously knowing each other.
At first glance, the differences between the dance genres they represent are great. Nevertheless, they both call dance their home and follow their inner need to express themselves through movement. Regardless of whether they are on stage in a full-length piece or competing against each other, they see themselves as dancers and choreographers who work both alone and collaboratively and consider the development of their movement languages as an artistic practice.
The two choreographers have discussed terms that are typical for their dance styles, such as skills, improvisation and freestyle, in order to lend them new meanings. As the outcome, they present an experimental dance evening in the open spaces of the Kunstverein, inside and outside the exhibition Sometimes to be lost is to be found by Akinbode Akinbiyi.
Following the performance on 25 JAN there will be an aftertalk in Spoken English.
Tiago Manquinho works as a freelance choreographer with various theaters and institutions in Europe. Until 2017, he was the in-house choreographer at the Staatstheater Braunschweig. With his long-term experience as an artistic director of intergenerational community dance projects, he focuses on respectful, emphatic forms of creative collaboration. Since 2014, he has been a lecturer for dance (contact improvisation) at the University of Bielefeld, part of the management team of TANZKOOP and a board member of LaFT (Landesverband Freier Theater) Niedersachsen.
Manuela Bolegue is a dancer and choreographer from France with Central African roots. She is travelling all around the globe to teach, compete, perform and judge. Her dance style is a combination of power, technic, musicality, and flow. She’s been active in the competition scene since 2005. Together with Sarah Bee, she won the 2008 Battle of the Year in the 2v2 B-Girl competition. She became B-Girl France in 2009 and 2010.
