It's OVAH Hannover: The Essence, Evolution, and Legacy of Ballroom
OVAH Hannover
In this panel talk, important personalities from the international and national Ballroom community will guide us through the captivating history and enduring legacy of the Ballroom scene. This discussion aims to delve into the diverse aspects of ballroom history, tracing its roots and highlighting essential moments that have molded the movement.
The Ballroom community, originally created by Black and Latinx trans women in Harlem, New York City in the late 60s and 70s, has evolved into a safer space for countless PoC, trans and queer individuals. The history is a big part of what drives the community today, and it became a symbol of empowerment, resilience and self-expression.
In the community, people come together in different "Houses" that serve as "Chosen Families" and offer strong support.
These houses, each possessing a unique identity, traditions and leadership, participate in competitive events known as "Ball's". These balls feature an array of categories, spanning fashion, beauty, and performance arts, showcasing the multifaceted talents within the ballroom community.
The panel-talk promises not only a journey through the vibrant history of ballroom but also an exploration of its current significance. It symbolizes the strength and unity forged within this community, emphasizing its role as a dynamic force that continues to break barriers and inspire individuals on their unique paths.
