1GUH WATCH brings Dancehall to the stage of contemporary dance. How can this ‘social dance’ best be translated into the theatre space? For her latest collaborative work, choreographer Tamara Alegre has decided to present Dancehall in its raw essence through its creators themselves, teaming up with international stars of the scene such as Dynamic Legends, Miss Rose, Dj Pappi and Finnish photographer eye juice. With additional guests, including Damion BG, who can only be seen in the Hanover version, they showcase the rich, detailed and community-based choreographic dance vocabulary. Together they celebrate the powerful creativity and unity that characterises the everyday emotions, struggles and triumphs of Dancehall.
In addition to the performances, an artist talk with Tamara Alegre and Dynamic Legends of 1GUH WATCH will take place on 1 FEB at 14.00 at Probebühne B, the admission to the artist talk is free. The artist talk will be followed by a Dancehall workshop led by Dynamic Legends.
Tamara Alegre works in the field of dance and choreography. Born in Gran Canaria, she studied European Business and Psychology and worked as an underground music curator, DJ and tour manager until 2016. In 2018, she completed a master’s degree in choreography at DOCH, Stockholm, and presented FIEBRE, co-signed since 2019 with Lydia Ö Diakité, Marie Ursin, Nunu Flashdem and Célia Lutangu. The work has been presented in several venues in Europe and won the Young Choreographer’s Award in 2021. Her research revolves around sensual embodiments, fictions of sexuality/sexual organs and liminal physical states as choreographic tools. Her work is embodied and charged with resistance, intensity, self-pleasure and the power of dancing together. Tamara has a growing passion for Dancehall and questions how to position herself as a white person with access to Black culture, as well as the navigation between her work and Dancehall. She is currently resident artist at the Arsenic, Lausanne, where she has created and presented NX FUIMO with Elie Autin, Marga Alfeirão and Cuba in 2022. Recently, Tamara has been concentrating on teaching, notably at La Manufacture, Lausanne, and Impulstanz, Vienna, while organising various types of workshops in collaboration with her collaborators, associations such as Rainbow Spot and CHO in Lausanne, and also with Jamaican artists. The combination of working as a dancer, creating works, running workshops and taking part in collaborative practices is essential to her.
