TRANSEPT

Boris Charmatz & César Vayssié

2023, Video HD, Ton

Based on his first solo work SOMNOLE (2021), Boris Charmatz has created the film TRANSEPT, shot in the Saint-Eustache church in Paris. He dances and whistles in the Gothic basilica, which seems to respond with its ancient architecture, sacrality and echoing sound. Charmatz, not a believer himself, has been working, designing and dancing in churches for some time, partly also because dance was forbidden in churches for centuries. He names his work after the film location, the transept, the origin of the word points to a transgression and a conclusion. Finally, he refers to the filming of dance, which he has been producing for over 20 years: ‘Filming dance means completing it and going beyond it, doesn't it?’
