Tri Tempi
William Forsythe
2023, 3 Channel Video Loop
The choreographer and dancer William Forsythe is known for having liberated the practice of ballet from its identification with the classical repertoire and transformed it into a dynamic art form of the 21st century. Forsythe's profound interest in the organisational basic principles of choreography has led him to realise a wide range of projects in the fields of installation, film, and internet-based knowledge development. For the past 20 years, he has been developing so-called choreographic objects that explore the boundaries between visual art and choreography.
William Forsythe's video work Tri Tempi (2023) illustrates the principle underlying his concept of choreographic objects.
The aim of the work is to bring three flexible objects, each with significantly different material properties, manually to maximum acceleration. Although the properties of the materials ultimately miss the aim, the physical strategies that the materials exert on the body lead to a series of different, practical postures and gestures: an unconscious choreography.
